What a Thursday pre-read actually has to carry
Executive KPI dashboards for cross-functional reporting are often designed for the room and never for the hour before the room. A chief of staff reading on Thursday night needs exception notes, not a second orientation. If every panel requires a whispered legend, the sitting will spend its time on cartography.
We test a canvas with a cold reader: someone who did not attend the interviews. They get twenty minutes and a red pencil. Anything they circle as “what is this?” is a candidate for the appendix. The first page keeps only measures that already have a spoken floor example.
Refresh windows belong in the margin, not in a footnote that disappears on a phone. If operations refreshes nightly and people metrics refresh on the second working day, the pack must say so in the same ink as the number. Otherwise the room treats a two-day lag as a dispute.
Density is not sophistication. A board pack that tries to honour every function equally becomes a quilt. Cross-functional reporting is the art of a shared first page and honest appendices. Sales can have its funnel pages; they should not steal the type hierarchy from cash conversion or safety.
